Why Do My Dentures Click When I Talk?

An occasional tooth contact is different from repeated clicking every time you talk. Simon explains why a persistent click deserves a closer look at the bite.

The teeth need room at rest

When the jaws are relaxed, the upper and lower teeth normally have a small space between them. If a denture's bite height or tooth positions do not suit the mouth, the teeth may meet during speech. Do not try to assess the correct measurement yourself.

A small contact can make a difference

Sometimes a particular part of a tooth catches during movement. The clinician can examine how the teeth meet and decide whether a controlled adjustment would help. Other causes of movement or noise also need consideration.

Describe when it happens

Is the click during conversation, chewing, or only one jaw movement? Does it come with soreness or clenching? Those details help at a review. Simon suggests including this in a broader denture check, so cleanliness, wear and fit are considered together. Do not grind down the teeth at home to silence the sound.
